Merck and RavenBrick Cooperate on Energy-Efficient Liquid-Crystal Windows

Darmstadt, Germany; September 27, 2011. Merck KGaA, through its U.S. subsidiary EMD Chemicals, and Ravenbrick, a Denver-based clean technology company, have announced a cooperative project that uses Merck's liquid crystals and RavenBrick's window technology to create thermochromic energy-efficient windows that can "open" and "close" (reflect lesser and greater amounts of light) depending on the outside temperature. On hot days RavenWindow reflects the sun's light and heat away from the building, keeping indoor temperatures cooler. When outdoor temperatures drop RavenWindow becomes transparent, letting free solar heat inside.

RavenWindows have recently been installed at the Research Support Facility (RSF) on the campus of the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. The new 220,000-square-foot RSF is one of the most energy efficient buildings in the world, garnering the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design's (LEED) highest rating, platinum.
